2009 Sudirman Cup to be held in Guangzhou

At the end of the award ceremony, the flag of the International Badminton Federation was handled to Guan Weizhen, Chairman of the Guangzhou Badminton Association, signifying that the 2009 Sudirman Cup will be held in Guangzhou.

On June 16th, over 200 representatives from more than 130 nations and regions attended the meeting of the International Badminton Federation held in Britain's Glasgow region. At the meeting, representatives of the Guangzhou Badminton Association presented the preparatory work for the 11th Sudirman Cup to be held in 2009 and presented a promotional film. They also exchanged experiences with officials from the Glasgow Municipality which hosted this year's Sudirman Cup.

Badminton is popular in Guangzhou and in recent years the city has hosted the World Junior Badminton Championships, the Men's Thomas Cup and Women's Uber Cup. Additionally Guangzhou has hosted the China Open Badminton Championships for 5 successive years. Guangzhou can, therefore, boast professional organizing committees, rich experience and perfect facilities for international tournaments. Officials of the International Badminton Federation gave Guangzhou Municipality an important vote of confidence in holding the 11th Sudirman Cup.
